Community engagement is an important aspect of life at the Amathole Museum.

Amathole Museum

Amathole Museum is 128 years old. All four buildings are national monuments, and house displays on Local History, Xhosa History and a wide variety of animals.

Missionary Museum

Missionary Museum is a satellite of the Amathole Museum. It displays many facets of missionary work in the Eastern Cape.


Collection form the core of the Amathole Museum. Thousands of artefacts are curated in the History, Xhosa Ethnography and Mammal collections.


The Amathole Museum is the home of Huberta, the world's most famous hippopotamus. More than seventy five years after her death, young and old are still captivated by the story of her wanderings.

Xhosa traditional knowledge, ranging from artifacts and medicines to myths and rituals.



The museum's Anthropology section conducts research on a variety of topics.
